Thanksgiving

Last weekend we had a big Thanksgiving party hosted by a friend in downtown Cairo. Actually I wasn#t expecting too many people but then we were 60 guests. Wow and there was still enough food and booze for everybody.

The next day I went over to the Conrad Hotel and visited their Christmas Market. Well, kinda disappointing. Looks yourself. But at least the Austrian guys sold mull wine.

Later that day I went over to a friends place and we spent the day drinking Gin Tonic, walking around Mohandseen (part of Cairo) and enjoying the view from his place.

Yesterday after work I went to the BCA again in Maadi for the quiz night. We took a different route this time to avoid some nasty trafffic, when I was able to see the pyramids again from a new angle.

On the weekend I will fly to Dubai for the Rugby Dubai 7s and some relaxation. 

Maadi House - Friday night

So the next day I was busy in the eve with an invitation to the Maadi House Club, something like a US Embassy Club. At least security getting in was like airport. Inside it was awesome. All the beers you need, even the one I usually get in the Irish pub in Kaiserslautern. So nice drinking a Guinness again.

There was a rockband this night in contrast to the jazz stuff the evening before.

Weekend - Cairo Jazz Club

So last Thursday I ended up with the folkd from Internations.org in the Cairo Jazz Club. Nice evening, nice people, great music. We were around 60, taking half the venue. Got pretty late.

Boring everday life

Hi,

nothing special happening here in Egypt. Just the normal stuff, you know. During my workweek from Sunday till Thursday nothing exciting is happening (besides work related stuff, but don't worry I won't bugger you with that). Thursday evening has somehow turned into a all-you-can-drink party evening at the local watering hole a few minutes away. The weekend is dedicated for other stuff, usually at least once going to Cairo city and meet some other guys and girls. This weekend we went out to the Intercontinental hotel and filled up in the Thai restaurant "Birdcage". Was quite nice, good food and so. Nice company.

Hi, just to keep you guys posted on what is happening in Egypt recently. Last weekend I was at the beach again. This time I stayed for the night at the hotel to enjoy two complete days there. I even went diving and enjoyed it. I will finish my licence as soon as I can. It is kinda difficult to do this though if you can only come there every now and then. But I will defiantly will finish.

This weekend I was out in Cairo for a pub crawl with some other expats. Great to see some new places and learn something new about Cairo again.

That's the view from the "Pour Vouz"-Rooftop bar in Zamalek. Next weekend I ll try to go to the Conrad Hotel on the other side of the Nile for some entertainment.

On Saturday, rude awakening when I heard that attacked the Italian Consulate with a 400kg car bomb. State of Sinai (IS-related) claims responsibility. Italian consulate is one block from the bars.

How to manage all the different visas and stamps in your passport

Not sure if it's only happening to me or if our border control guys are just incompetent, but they usually take minutes going through my passport to find the correct stamp and visa. Then they just push the new stamp somewhere else and let you pass.

In order to speed this procedure up, I started to "bookmark" the most recent stamp. For example right now I this bookmark on my Egyptian arrival stamp from some weeks ago. When I leave again, it can be found again quickly and I can proceed much faster. I also put a smaller bookmark to my current residence visa, as the other two are expired and keep confusing the genius border control officers.

What do I use for bookmarking? Just a simple paperclip. Do not write or stick anything adhesive in your passport! This can void your passport (depending on country of issuing and border post).

Well, that's kinda surprise...

When I heard of two car bombs in Cairo and Sinai yesterday I was not thinking anything in particular besides "Welcome to Africa". Seems like the IS or State of Sinai (that's how they call themselves here) has targeted some high-valued politicians yesterday, among the chief prosecutor against the Muslim brotherhood.

Anyway, in the foreshadowing of some bigger protests coming up today (30th June, Muslim brotherhood revolution, that's revolution number #2), the government announced yesterday that they declare today as public holiday. That's like a 6 hour notice up-front. Well, I take that without asking the deeper motivation ...(probably to keep people at home today and off the streets rather than travelling to work and clashing with more insurgents and troublemakers). Heavy police present and tanks have been spotted already tonight in Cairo.

On my way back from the Company Iftar yesterday in the Mövenpick Hotel we drove past an not-ending convoy of APCs and MRAPs heading from the central security forces camp next to our area towards Cairo downtown. Either they gonna invade Israel again or shit is going to get serious today.

Like on all of those lockdown days, I will watch the world burn from the rooftop with some cold beer and some bacon on the barbie.

Ramadan

Hello, just a few words from me... It has been some time again since last time, sorry. I am doing great in Egypt, no troubles at all. Weekends are long and shiny. Now with Ramadan, I have to work even less. Like paradise, combined with some great weather it's like working in the morning only. It will be quite hard for me to come back to the normal working time once Ramadan is over. 

Also I could extend my rental contract, so I will stay for one more year in this nice flat. Considering all the work I have invested to get some decent mobile internet reception, I am quite happy. 

Great view from my rooftop during the weekend, I think it was even the weekend before this one. The moon seems too big for being this weekend...

In the Westtown Hub the people really gather every evening now (but I think that's because of Ramadan) and enjoy themselves. We have live music, food and entertainment all night long (until 3am...).

My last weekendday was not so nice though. Sandstorm (with strong winds), heat of around 38 Celcius and poor visibility. It all started at 11am or something like that. Suddenly it became quite dark and stayed like that until the next morning. I could only stay inside, watch TV and do other stuff.

Tonight we will have the Iftar with the whole company. I remember it from last year, was fun. I will try to make some pictures. The amount of food served is beyond your imagination...

letztes Wochenende habe ich mir gedacht, "Komm was so solls, auf nach Dubai...!". Also zwei Tage Urlaub genommen und ab in den Flieger in die Emirate. Diesesmal habe ich FlyDubai ausprobiert. Die bieten eine direkte Verbindung nach DXB von Alexandria aus. Flug ist gut, günstig und war eigentlich fast leer. Für 200USD kann man sich für Return-Ticket nicht beschweren. Einzig die Anfahrt nervt. Zweieinhalb Stunden von meiner Bude, nicht a genehm. Mach ich also nicht nochmal... Es sein denn die Ticketpreise sind yo krass verschieden. Der Airport in Alexandria ist schlechter als Zweibrücken Airport. Es gibt nix. Nur Ägypter. Lief aber alles glatt (nach einer manuellen Gepäckkontrolle :-D). Den fehlt wohl Geld für X-Ray... 

In Dubai dann halt das Übliche... Pool, Mall, Wüste und Trips in andere Städte (dieses mal al-Ain). Dort ging es auf den zweithöchsten Berg in UAE. Haben auch ein Hotel da oben. Von der Poolbar hat man eine nette Aussicht auf 1800m (und 35°C). 

Vom Garten aus können wir auch den Burj Khalifa sehen... Ist mir so nie aufgefallen. Auf dem Foto vielleicht auch nicht gut zu sehen, ist halt schon ein wenig entfernt.

Abends dann auch in die Marina und am Strand vorm Burj al-Arab essen gewesen.

Aber ich kann mir echt nicht vorstellen, wer sich jetzt in der Sommer Saison freiwillig an den Strand legt. Ohne Schatten. Der Sand ist so heiß, dir schmelzen die Flipflops. Dann lieber (Whirl)pool.

Ansonsten war es eigentlich ganz verkraftbar was die "Hitze" anging. Ich glaub ich bin schon gut abgehärtet inzwischen. Top waren 52°C, habe leider nur ein Foto von den 46°C machen können. Aber ja, in der Sonne ist es brutal. Dafür gibt es ja Schatten... Und gut dass der Whirlpool bei uns im Garten im Schatten liegt...

Um Mitternach am Sonntag bin ich dann wieder in Ägypten gelandet. Noch mal zweieinhalb Stunden zurück nach Sheik-Zayed. Brutal. Und am nächsten Tag Büro :-O Aber was solls. Muss man durch.

Die Woche ging es dann noch mal nach Cairo, zum Bluttest... Für mein neues residence visa. Selber Laden wie beim ersten Mal, dieses mal noch heruntergekommener. Die haben echt kein Geld für Reparaturen... Ministerium für Gesundheit... Draußen auf der Straße liegen die Spritzen rum und jeder läuft in Sandalen rum...

Gut, als weißer Mann muss man nirgendwo anstehen und kommt immer direkt dran. Und man bekommt eine neue Spritze (das soll ein Scherz sein, aber ich kann mir auch vorstellen, dass es nicht immer saubere nadeln gibt). Welcome to Africa.... Nächstes Jahr komm ich in Arbeitsschuhen (Sicherheitsschuhe....) :-D

Als Mitbringsel aus Dubai habe ich auch das mtgebracht. Gute Investition von 6€. Jetzt habe ich mein eigenen "Pool" auf dem Dach. Schon ausgiebig genutzt :-D

Soft-Opening des Westtown HUBs

Dieses und letztes Wochenende gab es ein sogenanntes soft-opening der Mall, welche sich gerade fünf Gehminuten von meiner Wohnung befindet. Besteht im Prinzip nur aus Restaurants und Cafes, aber das ist eigentlich genau das was ich hier momentan am meisten brauche. Immer nur Golfclub wird auch irgendwann öde.

Neben einem Costa und einem Starbucks gibt es noch viele kleine private Restaurants, einmal quer über den Erdball. Perfekt! Da habe ich die nächsten Wochen Abends mal immer wieder was zu tun ;-).

Eiskaffee, französisches Brot, etc... Alles da... Für eine gewissen Preis, aber okay... Muss ja nicht immer sein.

Ansonsten war nichts weiter außer hart entspannen. letzes Wochenende war ja mit dem Trip nach Alex schon aufwendig. Nur bischen Büro, Golf, Bundesliga und Bier. Auf dem Weg ins Büro heute morgen übrigen einen neuen Rekord gesehen... Der Pickup hat bei jeder Bodenwelle aufgesetzt. Idioten.

Die Pools entwickeln sich auch so langsam, wer aufmerksamer Leser ist müsste noch ein Foto von vor ein paar Wochen im Gedächtnis haben. Da war nur die unterste Reihe an Fließen gelegt. Sind hier halt nicht die schnellsten... So long... nächstes Wochenende erst mal wieder Dubai!

Alexandria Mai 2015

So, nachdem die ganze Besucherflut erst mal vorbei ist (dazu bald mehr), hatte ich ein Wochenende für mich und konnte dieses in Alexandria verbringen. Zweieinhab Autostunden von meiner Wohnung, eine Perle am Mittelmeer. Am Vormittag ging es dann los, erst mal die komplette Promenade entlang.

Bis an die Spitze. Dort stand einmal der Leuchtturm von Alexandria (eines der sieben Weltwunder der Antike). Heute befindet sich dort eine Festungsanlage, die auf den Ruinen des Turms erbaut wurde. Aber auch diese Anlage ist genial. War eigentlich das Beste dieses Wochenendes. Hat mich sehr an Malta erinnert, ist ja auch nicht mehr weit entfernt.

Danach ging es in ein griechisches Restaurant zum Mittagessen. Fisch und Feta, gute Kombination.

Danach noch ein wenig durch die Ghettos geschlendert, zum ersten Mal Microbus gefahren und sich noch ein paar Sachen angeschaut, die reine Geldverschwendung waren. Die "Attraktionen" sind teilweise in einem so schlechten Zusand, da ist schon Fremdschämen angesagt, wenn man sich das anschaut. Aber ich sehe ja solche Wochenendtouren immer als "scouting trips", damit ich weiß was ich mit meinen Besuchern dann machen muss. Damit es sich lohnt. Also, wer Bock hat, ich kenn mich in Alex jetzt aus und mach euch den "Führer".

Hotel war ziemlich geil. Knapp 60$ bezahlt, cooles Zimmer mit Meerblick und perfekte Lage. Haben auch ein Pool auf dem Dach, aber dazu war keine Zeit. Ich komme wieder Grand Hotel Alex!

Lage deswegen perfekt, weil die beiden Bierkneipen direkt um die Ecke sind, keine zwei Minuten zu Fuß. Die Kneipe Cap D'Or soll ja angeblich die aus dem Film "Ice cold in Alex" sein, einem alten Kriegsfilm von 1958. Geht um paar Soldaten, die unbedingt zurück nach Alexandria wollen und ihr kühles Bier bestellen wollen :-)

Abends dann erst mal ein Aperitivo Bier auf dem Dach des Cecil Hotels genossen. Bier und Alkohol ist in Alexandria nicht so einfach zu finden wie in Cairo. Nur die internationalen Hotels und ein paar wenige Hinterhofkneipen sind da im Spiel. Anway, die rooftop bar des Cecil Hotels (China House Restaurant) bietet eine tolle Aussicht.

Abends dann noch mal Fisch essen an der Promenade. Cap D'Or Bar und Spitfire Bar abgeklappert und dann ins Bett. Am nächsten Tag dann noch mal losgezogen und bischen mehr Kultur mitgenommen. Poste hier jetzt nicht jedes Foto, wird sonst zuviel. War am römischen Amphitheater, Pompei Säule und und und

Erwähnenswert finde ich das Alexandria National Museum. Tausend mal besser als das "Egyptian Museum" in Kairo. Viel besser gemacht, sauber, organisiert und auf jeden Fall lohnenswert.

Am Nachmittag dann noch Kaffee in einem der alten Kaffeehäuser geschlürft und dann wurde ich auch schon wieder abgeholt und es ging zurück nach Cairo. Das nächste mal muss ich dann wohl in die Bibliothek, Gärten von Montazah und noch ein paar andere Dinge checken. Hier gibt es viel zu tun.
